米・同時多発テロに端を発したチャリティCDの中で、最も大掛かりなプロジェクトの一つ、アーティスツ・アゲインスト・エイズ・ワールドワイド（AAAW）による「ホワッツ・ゴーイング・オン」（ソニー SICP56）が、アメリカで2001年10月30日、日本では11月７日に発売されることが決まった。
このレコーディングは、2001年９月５日と７日の両日、アフリカにおけるエイズ禍をこれ以上広げないためにとの目的でなされた。しかし同11日にテロが発生したたため、急きょ、テロ犠牲者のための基金に売り上げの半分を寄付することに決めたという経緯を持つ（残りの50％はエイズ基金へ）。
参加したのは、 U2のボノ、 バックストリート・ボーイズ、 ブリットニー・スピアーズほか、そうそうたるメンバー（写真＝同プロジェクトのHPから／メンバーは次ページの歌詞を参照）。
ベトナム戦争時代に大ヒットした マービン・ゲイの不朽の名作が、エイズ禍とテロの21世紀に向けて再び歌われることになった。
